Projects under the Presidency of Iacovos Constantinides
A. Community Activity – Purchase of mobile incubator
Scope
This project is about the purchase of a mobile incubator and its donation to the Arch. Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia. The machine will meet the specifications that will be set by the Arch. Makarios III Hospital and it will be delivered in March 2008 (the latest).
Need survey
According to the Head of the Newborns’ Intensive Care Unit at Arch. Makarios III Hospital (the only such unit in Nicosia District) the need of a modern, well equipped and readily available mobile incubator is extremely important because the mobile incubator that they are currently using is very old (10 years old) and is not equipped with some basic monitoring appliances. Additionally, the production of this model has ceased long ago and there are no spare parts available and therefore it has become beyond repair. There is no such machine in Nicosia District while at the same time there is at least 1 incident per day (in Nicosia District) where a newborn has to be relocated. If this project was undertaken by the Government (Ministry of Health) it would have taken them at least 3 years to be completed and implemented.
Benefit
The purchase of this machine will offer newborns who suffer from respiratory and/or cardiological problems as well as those lacking chances of survival, safe and well monitored transportation from the place of birth to either the Newborns’ Intensive Care Unit at Arch. Makarios III Hospital or to the airport or to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) centres. Apart from the direct beneficiaries, the newborns and their families (at least 356 families per year), the completion of this project will benefit all the private clinics operating in Nicosia District (currently none of them is equipped such a machine) and enable them to offer better health services to their patients. Additionally, the existence of this equipment will provide the Newborns’ Intensive Care Unit at Arch. Makarios III Hospital with the means to better allocate its resources and facilitate its overall administration.
Budget and Finance
The budget of this project is estimated at CYP25.000. It will be financed by: members’ subscriptions (20%), club’s fund raising events (20%) and external donations (60%).
